Think winter is the only time to enjoy Vail? You might be surprised that summer activities in Vail are quickly becoming some of the most sought-after adventures in the area. While skiing in Colorado is certainly popular–and rightfully so, just check out all of the mountain activities–there is plenty to do on the slopes after the snow melts. With year-round sunshine, crystal clear blue skies, clean air, and miles of trails to explore, Vail is unlike any place you’ve seen.

Hiking and Backpacking in Vail, Colorado

Strap on a pack and hit the trails, using the Eagle Bahn Gondola to bring you to higher peaks of interest or explore solely on foot from the base area. The views you experience will inspire and invigorate you, beckoning you to keep going to higher points. Enjoy wildflowers, wildlife, and miles of untouched earth that reminds you of what is important.

Vail Hiking Trails

Eagle’s Loop:  One-mile ridgetop loop with views of Mount of the Holy Cross.

Fireweed:  Peaceful, one-mile wooded trail between Adventure Ridge and Mid-Vail.

Berrypicker:  An intermediate 3.2 mile hike that winds down from Mid-Vail or Adventure Ridge to Vail Village or LionsHead.

Grand Escape:  This 1.5 mile trail offers breathtaking views and makes a loop with Ridge Route.

Ptarmigan Loop: A 1.2 mile trail through shaded woods connecting with Ridge Route (4 mile loop) at Wildwood to Ptarmigan Point and back.

Ridge Route:  An intermediate 1.4 mile ridge climb from Adventure Ridge to Wildwood and back with spectacular views.

Mountain Biking in Vail, Colorado

From beginners to experts, Vail trails offer something for every mountain biking enthusiast. With local shops providing bike rentals, as well as pads, helmets, and any necessary equipment, it is easy to hit the trail in the best equipment available. Enjoy white-knuckle challenge and adventure on a double black or take the scenic route and choose one of the green trails that provide optimal views of the Vail valley. For those who don’t have experience with mountain biking, downhill biking trails require special equipment and instruction before your first run. Make sure you check with a local bike company before tackling your first downhill trail.
